Drain Description
The Lakeshore Drain was first constructed in the early 1900's. A plan for
the reconstruction on its current alignment was prepared in 1927. The drain
consists of a variety of piping materials and sizes. The outfall to the Galien
River is located southeast of Skip's Restaurant in New Buffalo Township. The
drain crosses Red Arrow Highway south of Skip's Restaurant, turning north
on the west side of Red Arrow Highway. From there it continues northerly to
its terminus north of McKinley Street in Chikaming Township. The drainage
watershed is approximately 200 acres and has become increasingly developed.
In addition, many of the properties have been remodeled, resulting in a general
increase in property values. The main drain pipe is approximately 7400 feet
long. The depth ranges from about 3 feet at the upstream end to about 9 feet
at Skip's Restaurant. The portion under Red Arrow Highway could be 20 to 30
feet deep.
Drain Condition & Problems Noted
A field investigation of the route of the drain has recently been completed.
A significant portion of the drain is overgrown with mature trees. In addition,
there are several locations where structures have been built within the drainage
easement. In some cases, it is believed that homes and other structures may
actually lie over the pipe. Historic flooding and lack of proper drainage
exists throughout the Drainage District.
Recommended Action
Due to the poor condition observed, problems reported, general age and inadequate
available grades, a project to improve the drain is underway. A two-stage
approach is being taken to address the problem in the Drainage District.
